Marquez seeks respect in 3rd bout vs Pacquiao

MANILA, Philippines – What motivates Juan Manuel Marquez in his upcoming fight against Manny Pacquiao is the desire to gain the respect that has long eluded him, a sports analyst said.

ABS-CBN resident sports analyst Boyet Sison said Marquez badly wants to win on November 12, and it's not just because he wants to take home the WBO welterweight title.

“Marquez has a lot of hunger simply because he wants his due respect, something that has been denied him all these years, simply because of somebody like Manny Pacquiao,” Sison said.

“That will be the burning desire that has been eating him for so long that will fuel him to give his best against Pacquiao,” he added.

Sison said Marquez felt he failed to get recognition he deserved during his first two clashes against Pacquiao.

In 2004, Marquez fought to a controversial draw despite suffering 3 first-round knockdowns to Pacquiao.

The Mexican suffered another knockdown and lost via split-decision to the Filipino during a closely fought rematch in 2008.

“More than anything, Marquez’s mental state is the one that’s fueling him to face Pacquiao at this level, at this point in time,” said Sison.

The 38-year-old Mexican champion will square off against the 32-year-old Filipino boxing legend at a 144-pound catch weight.

The title fight will take place on November 12 (November 13 in Manila) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
